E-COMMERCE IN THE UK WILL EXCEED 222 BILLION EUROS THIS YEAR.

Ecommerce in the United Kingdom is expected to be worth 222.5 billion euros at the end of this year. That would mean an increase of almost 11 percent compared to the situation last year, when the B2C ecommerce turnover was worth just over 200 billion euros.

Last year, ecommerce in the United Kingdom finally surpassed the milestone of 200 billion euros. Now, it’s set to add an extra 22 billion euros on top of that, with the expectation that the British online retail industry will be worth 222.5 billion euros at the end of the year.

The UK, the largest B2C ecommerce market in Europe, is a very digitized society, with 96 percent of the population expected to be online this year. Last year, 87 percent of that online population bought something online.

The predicted growth rate has also seen a huge upturn as a result of Covid 19.

GENERATION X ARE THE MOST ACTIVE ONLINE SHOPPERS

Among the different age groups, Generation X consumers (born between 1966 and 1981) made more online purchases last year than any other age group, averaging nearly 19 transactions per year. Interestingly, despite the common belief that the upswing in online shopping is largely driven by the younger and more ’tech-savvy‘ Millennials (born between 1982 and 2001), Generation X consumers in fact made 20 percent more purchases last year than their younger counterparts. Stage of life and income levels are certainly primary factors driving both online and offline shopping, and Generation X consumers, many of which are more established in their careers and building homes

E-COMMERCE SALES SHOW THE LARGEST ANNUAL GROWTH SINCE 2014

The value of e-commerce sales in the UK non-financial sector reached £688 billion in 2018, rising from £582 billion in 2017. This annual growth of 18% was the largest seen since comparable records began in 2014. When looking at businesses with 10 or more employees, there is a similar trend, with e-commerce sales rising by 17% since 2017, the largest growth since 2009.

UK MUSIC STREAMING SALES CROSSED THE £1 BILLION MARK IN 2019

The UK saw a 7.1% rise in overall music spending in 2019 even though the British entertainment market showed a 17% fall in physical sales, which totalled £318 million. Download purchases fell 27% to just under £90 million.  Counteracting the decline was a 23% rise in streaming subscription sales, which crossed the £1 billion mark for the first time ever. That’s four times as much as Brits spent on streaming music just five years ago. It’s also 31 times the level it was in 2010 when streaming sales totalled just £31 million. British Artist Ed Sheeran reigns as the UK’s most streamed act.
